Dão - Casa da Passarella
One of the most classic wine regions of Portugal has entered a new phase. Young winemakers have broken with the drying, ripe and somewhat old-fashioned style of the previous generation. They now make elegant, world-class wines on the characteristic granite soils of the Dão. A good example is the small Casa da Passarella, where Paulo Nunes, in the Serra da Estrela sub-region, manages to turn the indigenous grapes into quality wine.
Just as Dão is legendary, both for its history and its apparent singularity in producing fine wines, so are the wines of Casa da Passarella, full of history and sentiment.
Casa da Passarella is a 150 year old domain in the rugged mountains of Serra da Estrela. In 2007 it was bought by Ricardo Cabral, whose grandfather once worked on the estate. He had the dilapidated wine estate restored and modernised. The wine cellar was equipped with large concrete tanks in which the wines can ripen naturally.
Of the original 200 hectares of vineyards, there are still 40 left. They are planted with (partly very old) vines of a large number of different grape varieties. The plots are between 400 and 600 metres high, which gives the grapes more acidity and - because they hang on to the stick a little longer - more mature tannins. Nunes turns it into remarkably pure, elegant wines with a concentrated, lively taste: a beautiful reflection of a special place
