Tejo - Casal da Coelheira
Casal da Coelheira is located on the banks of the Tagus (Tejo), one hour north-east of Lisbon. Casal da Coelheira is Portuguese for Rabbit Cage. In 1986 this estate, near the village of Tramagal, was bought by the parents of the current winemaker Nuno Falcão Rodrigues, the driving force behind this domainCasal da Coelheira is one of the most prestigious producers of the region, with a clear focus on the quality of their wines, known for their unique and distinctive character. Their goal is to produce wines of consistent quality. The wines of this quinta offer an excellent compromise between quality and price. For three generations, this project has become a family passion born on the banks of the Tagus over an area of approximately 250 hectares, spread over vineyards and various arable crops that are protected by a small area of pine forests. The landscape diversity of the estate has left some game species, such as mallard, wild boar and rabbits - the predominant species in the area - and therefore the name of the estate, Casal da Coelheira.
This region is characterized by extreme, long summers, and cold, wet winters. The sandy soils on which the vines are planted retain only small amounts of water, which means that the plants have to make enormous efforts each year to reach these water reserves. This results in less leaf growth and more concentrated grapes
