A sublime Port with a lustrous copper hue that fades to soft amber at the rim. The nose is alluring, offering rich aromas of gingerbread, honeysuckle, bitter orange, marzipan, and smooth caramel. On the palate, it is soft and seductive, featuring notes of rum and raisin, delicate citrus, guava, a hint of grilled pineapple, butterscotch, and honey. The finish is precise, refined, and elegant, boasting lovely fresh acidity and great length.

Taylor's has decided to release a limited edition of a Single Harvest Port each year—specifically one produced fifty years prior. Taylor's Managing Director, Adrian Bridge, stated: "A 50th birthday or anniversary is a milestone. Taylor's Single Harvest Ports offer a unique opportunity to celebrate such occasions with an extraordinary 50-year-old wine in perfect condition." The concept behind the collection is simple yet unique. Taylor's holds one of the largest reserves of very old, cask-aged Port of any producer, including a collection of rare Single Harvest Ports that remain in the cask until fully mature and bear the vintage year on the label. Each year, the house releases a limited quantity of a Single Harvest Port made exactly fifty years earlier; the 1976 vintage marks the tenth release in this series. The series began with the 1964 vintage. There is a reason why the 1976 is the tenth release rather than the twelfth: following a gap for the years 1972 through 1974, the 1976 follows next, as no stocks remain from those intervening vintages. The term "Colheita," under which you sometimes see this wine, is the Portuguese name for precisely this type: a tawny port from a single vintage. Taylor's itself uses the name "Single Harvest."

Single Harvest Ports are blended wines from a single year which have been aged in oak casks. They are fully mature and ready to drink when bottled. The long period of wood ageing gives them their characteristic amber colour, smooth velvety palate, warm mellow flavours and nose full of rich complex aromas.

It was an extreme year. An exceptionally dry winter was followed by a hot summer bordering on drought, causing springs and wells to dry up for the first time in living memory. The harvest began on September 23, yielding fully ripe, healthy bunches. Managing Director Adrian Bridge selected the vintage for both its quality and its historical significance; he views 1976 as a year of global transformation and change. Moreover, he describes the wine as ideal for celebrating a fiftieth birthday or anniversary.
