Douro - Symington Family Estates
Over generations, the Symington family has built the largest vineyard in the Upper Douro Valley, and indeed, in Portugal. This unparalleled collection of excellent vineyards, spread across the length and breadth of the Douro Valley, forms the foundation of their high-quality wines and port. In the words of Paul Symington: "A blend of Scottish rationality and hard work, English common sense and Portuguese flair, emotion and romance." There is a natural affinity between wine and family. Long-term vision and commitment across generations are essential to the success of a family winery. A newly planted vineyard takes time to produce good wines and often requires a lifetime of care to achieve the best results. The Symingtons, with Scottish, English, and Portuguese roots, have been present in the Douro since 1882, spanning 14 generations, dating back to the mid-17th century and the very beginning of Port wine history. The family owns 2,461 hectares of land in the Douro, divided into 26 individual estates. These estates, known as quintas, comprise over 1,000 hectares of vines, the vast majority of which are planted on terraces, making them the most important vineyards in the region.
Symington Estates is one of the leading quality port producers, responsible for producing approximately 32% of all premium port categories. Paul, Johnny, Rupert, Dominic, and Charles all work together to maintain the vineyards and produce the wines of their four historic port houses: Graham's, Cockburn's, Dow's, and Warre's. The family also manages Quinta do Vesúvio, one of Portugal's largest wine estates.
They are also among the pioneers in the development of Douro DOC wines, Chryseia, Post Scriptum, and Prazo de Roriz, produced in collaboration with the Prats family of Bordeaux.
The family is the only Douro producer to have produced a 21st-century port rated 100/100 by Wine Spectator: Dow's 2007 Vintage Port.
The family's dedication to Douro wines was further recognized in 2014 when Wine Spectator ranked Dow's 2011 Vintage Port as the No. 1 wine.
Another wine, produced in collaboration with Bruno Prats, Chryseia Douro DOC 2011, was classified No. 3. This Douro project, known as the Prats & Symington brand, by Bruno Prats, formerly winemaker at Cos D'Estournel, and the Symington family, with their unparalleled experience in port production, has resulted in a number of exceptional wines. The first vintage of Post Scriptum was 2002, introduced as a partner—or second wine—to Chryseia. The style is therefore. similar, rich and elegant with perfect balance. It's suitable for drinking young. Post Scriptum 2019 is opulent and full-bodied with pure, concentrated fruit, mineral and spicy notes – all underscored by fine acidity. Try this high-scoring, very affordable wine from two top brands.
This international recognition was an important step for the Douro wines and has significantly increased their reputation worldwide
