Niepoort Redoma Branco Reserva 2022
€ 43.50
The Redoma Reserva Branco 2020 is a true reflection of the wonderful terroir of old, high-altitude vineyards and predominantly granitic soils.
Its nose is delicate and fresh, featuring floral notes, orchard and citrus fruit mingling seamlessly with the barrels’ toasty notes. The palate reveals a complex interplay of spice, tropical fruit and citrus. This is a structured yet delicate wine with elegant body and a fantastic acidity culminating in a long, expressive finish. Much like its previous versions, this is a white wine which will greatly benefit from cellaring. Serve in Burgundy-style wine glass

The Redoma Reserva comes from vineyards which are more than 80 years old, planted in mica-schist soils at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. Since its first edition in 1995, the main objective in producing this wine has been to reflect the character of the Douro’s old vines. The best barriques were selected for the wine’s maturation in order to guarantee minerality, complexity and ageing potential.
The grapes were transported to the cellar under temperature-controlled conditions, sorted meticulously upon arrival and then gently and slowly pressed. The grape must was left to settle for approximately 24 hours before slowly fermenting in 228L French oak barrels. The Redoma Reserva matured for 9 months in barrel, without bâtonnage. It only partially underwent malolactic fermentation.
Bâtonnage is the process in which the sediment (lees) of mostly white wines, fermented on wooden barrels, is stirred. This creates a more stable wine, with less tannin and dye extraction of the barrel
The 2020 growing year was very heterogeneous. A rainy winter was followed by a quite moderate spring, providing favourable conditions for the vines’ growth. On the other hand, the month of June was relatively cool and slowed down the growth cycle. July brought very high temperatures (the hottest since 1931), with three heat waves which reduced the yields somewhat. Harvesting began in the first weeks of August in the hottest areas and concluded in the higher-lying slopes at the end of September. We found the 2020 vintage to be an excellent year for our white wines produced from these higher areas. Average yields meant extremely elegant wines with perfect concentration.
