Ginjinha, or 'ginja' is the Portuguese drink of drinks. What rum is to a Cuban and gin to a Dutchman, ginjinha is to a Portuguese, especially to a Lisboeta (resident of Lisbon).

Ginjinha is a shot of cherry liqueur that will have you walking on your hands and needing the full width of the road on your way home. You make it by mixing the slightly sour ginja cherry - known in Belgium as 'kriek - with aguardente and sugar. Aguardente is a collective name for alcohol of more than 40% and the literal translation is 'fire water'. Sugar comes from the sugar beet.

If you are in Lisbon, be sure to try the delicious local cherry liqueur. This sweet drink is actually served in all catering establishments. A nice drink for in between. Just to drink as is or from a chocolate cup. You can even find real Ginja stores!
