Dão - M.O.B. Moreira, Olazabal, Borges
MOB stands for the three Portuguese winemakers behind this project, the winemaker of Quinta de La Rosa and owner of Quinta de Poeira, Jorge Moreira, Francisco Olazabal of Quinta de Vale Meao, and winemaker of Passadouro and co-owner of Wine and Soul's Jorge Serôdio Borges. Being colleagues and friends since their oenological university days, they decided to take their friendship to the next level and make wine together, but outside the Douro and in a region where they all have incredible potential for producing quality wines with aging potential. This region is located in the Dão Valley. All three said it would be a mistake to mimic the Douro, instead of using the poor granite soils and the decidedly cool nights as an advantage in producing pure, linear style wines, with an alcohol content of around 12.5% .
The M.O.B collective has a 10-year lease (estate was previously known as Quinta de Corujão) and if things go well they hope to buy the vineyard and winery in due course. They have two vineyards on gentle hills, both located between the towns of Seia and Gouveia, one of 8 hectares in total and the other slightly steeper of 2 hectares in total. The vineyards are protected by the nearby Serra D’Estrela mountains, which (along with other mountain ranges in the Dão Valley) protect from the heat of the north and also contribute to the wind and rain to which their vines are exposed.
Working with indigenous grape varieties is the priority for M.O.B's three winemakers, including some old vines Baga, Touriga Nacional, Alfrocheiro, Bical, Encruzado, Jaen and Tinta Roriz.
The old low-yielding vines are planted on 100% granite soils, with plantings of 4500 vines / hectare, benefiting from water coming from one of the four wells on the property. Lack of water is not a problem here, however, as it often rains during harvest, which means rot is a threat when the grapes are not yet fully physiologically ripe. Contrary to the usual practice of the Douro, the grapes are fermented separately and later mixed for both the red and the white, which allows them to understand well how the grapes thrive in this terroir.
The result is classic, timeless and elegant wines with a high aging potential and distinct individuality. When three top winemakers come together and are best friends, the result can only be great.
