Sophisticated bouquet, a touch of wood that mixes with exotic spices and layers of Butterscotch and passion fruit, reminiscent of sweets, also fruitcake with a hint of nutmeg. Creamy, harmonious and a fine sobriety in the mouth. Opulent and mouth filling with more than sufficient acidity which ensures a perfect balance.
Mário Barbeito was born in Funchal in 1905 and died in the same city in 1985. In addition to his love of wine, books and reading were his other great passions. The history of Madeira, the history of Christopher Columbus and the discovery of America were the main themes of his personal library with more than twenty-five thousand books that were unfortunately lost during the floods of February 2010. To pay tribute to my grandfather, I decided to make this Bastardo more than 50 years old in which I mixed the wines I have produced over the years, from the São Jorge vineyards with some of the oldest he had left behind. In June 2017, 550 bottles were filled, all individually numbered

Madeira is a wine matured in an oxidative environment for several years, and then comes into the bottle in a reductive environment. It is therefore useful to open the bottles a few hours in advance. The bottles can then be kept almost unlimited, since the air has no influence on Madeira wines. In fact, the wine tastes better after months - if it remains - than when the bottle is opened.
