Douro - Porto Cruz
Porto Cruz, very well known in Belgium, France & Luxembourg, was founded in 1887 when it took over Assumpçao E Fos. In 1974 the company was owned by La Martiniquaise, the second largest spirits group in France, which also has port shipper C. da Silva (Dalva) and in Madeira, Justino's & Henriques & Henriques in portfolio.
In the past, much of the wine was bought from local cooperatives, now more than 50% of it is made in local wineries, which are under direct control of the company. Grapes from about 3000 growers are monitored by an in-house technical team. In 2013 a new winery was opened in Alijó on the northern edge of the Douro, increasing the percentage of own production again with more emphasis on premium style port wines. In 2015 Cruz acquired Quinta de Ventozelo, one of the largest and most spectacular estates on the Douro.
Their best selling product is the Cruz Tawny. Cruz also produces White, Ruby, Reserve, Ten- and Twenty-year-old Tawny, LBV and vintage port since 1985.
