North of the Douro region, in northeastern Portugal, lies the Trás-os-Montes wine region, separated from the coast by a mountain range including the Marão and Alvão mountains. The Trás-os-Montes region is divided into three subregions, Chaves, Valpaços and Planalto Mirandês, which lie along the valleys of the rivers they intersect. The first two subregions lie in the geographical centre of the appellation, with Planalto Mirandês on the plateau of the Serra do Mogadouro, to the southwest of the region.
