2003 was an excellent year with exceptional colheitas! Winter and spring were wet and cold, but were followed by a warm and hot summer, especially in August, where the temperature sometimes reached 40 degrees, unheard of, even in the Douro Valley. The harvest started in good conditions in September. The quantity was not large, but the grapes had a high concentration of sugar and extract, but with a fairly low acid content. Can be enjoyed quite young. Krohn Colheita 2003 has an aroma of matured fruit, caramel, mocha and raisins. The taste is a true explosion of plums, nuts, herbs and vanilla, nicely sweet in flavor, long and full

The traditional grape varieties are sourced from the Quinta do Retiro estate and neighbouring growers in the Rio Torto Valley. Here old vines are planted in schistous soils.
Fermentation in open granite tanks called 'lagares', where the grapes are trodden by foot. Fermentation is interrupted by the addition of grape spirit to preserve a certain degree of natural sweetness. All ageing is done in 547 litre oak barrels (the traditional 'pipe') and larger casks. The Port spends at least 10 years maturing in wood, before being bottled, unfiltered.
