With an attractive ruby-red hue, the Batuta 2017 shows a bit more concentration and especially depth than the previous few vintages. Its deeply austere but complex aromas offer generous notes of fruits of the forest. Delicate floral nuances and a distinct mineral character are subtly underlined by a hint of oak. A distinguished and elegant palate with plenty of acidity is supported by a firm tannic backbone. Despite its youth, the wine impresses with its depth and precision, and a very long, elegant and seductive finish. This is a wine which promises to age gracefully.

Batuta is not produced every year. This wine is made from grapes from Carril (a vineyard older than 70 years) and from another vineyard with still older vines of almost 100 years old, located near the Quinta de Napoles. It is the result of a strict selection of the grapes in the vineyard and on the sorting table

Food pairing

The Batuta is a very flexible food wine and pairs well with meat and fish such as monkfish, squid and grilled octopus.

matured for 22 months in French barriques of which 25% new wood barrels

Vinification

The 2017 vintage experienced a dry winter, with rainfall significantly lower than the average of the past 30 years. A hot and dry spring followed, with heat waves continuing right through to the end of June. With this increase in average temperatures and the lack of rainfall, the growth cycle was 2 weeks early, from budbreak to veraison. Summer brought more high temperatures and low rainfall levels, which led to an early, intensive and short harvest.

The nose is a bit shy, with dark and red fruits, tar, char, floral nuances. The palate is fresh, intense, with some raspberries, strawberries and plums. Good freshness and persistence.
