Niepoort Poeirinho 2019 Tinto
The 2019 vintage of the Poeirinho shows a brilliant violet hue. The nose is precise, very delicate and generally expressively aromatic. After a while in the glass, it shows a lot of class, with incredibly fine and delicate aromas. The wine impresses with its salty and maritime notes that are so typical of its calcareous terroir. In the mouth, it offers great precision, with great structure and grip. It is linear, distinctly mineral and refreshing, with notes of fresh fruit (cherries, strawberries and wild berries). Thanks to the high acidity and clear but soft tannins, this is a wine that ages nicely in the bottle. It is very long, with the same linearity and freshness. It is best enjoyed slightly chilled (15°C) in a glass of Pinot Noir.
The poeirinho, whose name refers to the former name for the grape variety Baga, is a tribute to the great Bairrada wines of the past, which were light in color and low in alcohol, but offer enormous aging potential. Dirk Niepoort's great passion for this grape variety and the fantastic terroir of the Bairrada inspired us in recent years to acquire a number of small but very old Baga vineyards in the Cantanhede area.
Food pairing
Delicious with roast lamb, sausage dishes, fried cod or vegetarian dishes with legumes
Grapes: 100% Baga
2019 was a year with some rain and an intense cold in March, which led to lower production. With a warm spring, the grape ripened earlier, which led to an early harvest. The white wine harvest started on August 26 and ended on September 26 with the red wines. It was a good year, with balanced acidity. Although the alcohol content is higher than last year, we managed to keep the freshness and elegance that characterize the wines of Quinta de Baixo.
Poeirinho 2019 comes from several plots with very old vines. It was vinified in an open wine press and closed barrel where it underwent a carbonic maceration and where it fermented for 4 weeks and finished fermentation in barrels. Malolactic fermentation took place in used barrels, where it matured for 20 months. It was bottled without filtration.
