It carries the classic Graham’s hallmarks – full-bodied, rich, and opulent – and will provide great drinking pleasure for decades to come. Dark purple in color with a strong viscosity. Aromas of black currant, plum and bergamot form the vanguard for flavors of dark berries and highlights reminiscent of apricot, followed by a long, firm finish. Symington Family Estates says that 2017 bears a resemblance to the rainfall and temperature patterns of the widely-acclaimed 1945 vintage
Unique to this vintage is that this is the first general back-to-back declaration since Andrew James Symington arrived in Porto in 1882. The announcement, only the sixth of the 21st century, ends a period of speculation in the wine world or 2017 would be worth an announcement. It was also the year with the earliest grape harvest in the history of the Symington family. Only 5,250 nine litre cases were bottled
Food-Pairing
A delicious digestive, but can also be accompanied by rich old cheeses, dark chocolate or chocolate mousse.
Grapes: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Sousao & andere oudere druiven
This wine is at best 10 to 15 years after the harvest but can also be drunk young
This wine is produced from vines at the flagship Graham’s property in the Douro valley, Quinta dos Malvedos, with small parcels of top graded grapes from the other vineyards that supply Graham’s: Quinta do Tua, Quinta da Vila Velha, Quinta das Lages and Quinta do Vale das Malhadas. In 2017 42% less rain fell at Malvedos than the 30 year average and the vines produced a small but extremely high-quality crop with extraordinary concentration. The wine was fermented in small batches at our specialist on-site winery at Malvedos
Winemaker: Charles Symington & Henry Shotton
