Quinta do Noval created the first LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) in 1958. An unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage made only with grapes from Noval's vineyards, this LBV is an outstanding introduction to the Noval style. It is treated exactly like a Vintage Port, made with only noble grape varieties from the Quinta, trodden by foot and unfiltered. The main difference is that it is aged for four, sometimes five years in wooden vats instead of the two years typical of Vintage Ports. Fine structured tannins, great freshness and purity of fruit; it is delicious to drink today, but will age beautifully in its bottle. This is Noval's "Baby Vintage", and has the record of longevity to back up that claim. Being unfiltered, it is delicious to drink today, but will also age beautifully for a few years in the bottle.
The 2016 Unfiltered Late Bottled Vintage Port is a field blend from typical grapes like Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousão aged for five years in casks. This traditional LBV comes in with 100 grams of sugar and a long cork. Noval is always a source for expressive and traditional LBVs that can age. The power here is more than I saw on some lesser Vintage Ports this issue. The concentration is not always as good but still admirable. The line is blurring a bit these days when you go from quality, traditional LBVs to lesser Vintage Ports. The big advantage for LBVs in those comparisons, and to me the deciding factor, is the price. They are the best values in Port. This is another terrific LBV from Noval—power, fruit, expressiveness and the ability to age. (c) Robert Parker
Food-Pairing
Taste delicious with chocolate desserts, especially if dark and bitter chocolate is used, also with foie gras, sublime with cheeses such as Cheddar, Gouda, Brie or blue cheeses such as Bleu de Bresse
, Blue Stilton, Roquefort & Portuguese cheeses. Spicy dishes with red meat or game, including lamb and veal. However, the combination that surpasses everything is an LBV and pepper steak!
