Ilha do Pico, the second-largest island in the Azores, is renowned for its unique wine culture dating back to the 15th century. The vineyards are nestled within walls of black volcanic stone, known as currais, which protect the grapes from wind and seawater. These vineyards have been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their historical and cultural significance.
Amidst this idyllic setting, Pico Wines symbolizes both tradition and innovation. Founded in 1949, Pico Wines is the largest and oldest wine producer in the Azores. They honor their ancestral winemaking methods and respect the rich history, while also embracing contemporary knowledge and techniques. Picowines is a collaborative venture located on the volcanic island. This artisanal winery is a true wonder. The grapes are sourced from a network of more than 250 dedicated partners/local winemakers who supply their finest grapes year after year. Salinity, freshness, and acidity are among the defining characteristics of Pico wines, influenced by the constant interaction with the Black Rocks, the caress of the sea breeze, and the embrace of the Atlantic climate.
The Azores are rightly recognized as one of the world's most sustainable destinations and the most beautiful in the Atlantic Ocean. Pico, in particular, distinguishes itself by producing a remarkable 82% Azorean wine, a testament to its rich winemaking heritage and dedication to excellence. In every bottle of Pico wines, you'll discover the enchanting landscapes and age-old traditions of the Azores, preserved and celebrated in every exquisite sip.
Pico wines are known for their minerality, freshness, and saline notes, influenced by the volcanic terroir and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.
