Alentejo - Torre do Frade
Torre do Frade, a magical place
The estate Torre do Frade is located in Portalegre in the high Alentejo, municipality of Monforte, parish of Santo Aleixo - a magical place marked by the passing of time. |
Torre do Frade has been part of the Albino family since 1839. At one point the country was divided by heredity among five children of the family. Four of them have combined their land and resources to create a bit of an Alentejano wine and farming empire. Their area extends as far as the eye can see, with fields of purple wild flowers, cattle, grains and now wine.
But the history of the country goes even further back. The building where Torre do Frade is located since 1348 and was inhabited by various monastic orders for about 500 years. Wine was produced based on old recipes that were left by the Romans. Eventually, around 1839, members of Diogo's family began to work the land until the 1970s when the country was lost to communist reforms. After about five years, the building was returned to the family when they started farming again. Diogo is part of the fourth generation of the family and manages the Torre do Frade wine trade.
In 1999 the vines were planted on 40 hectares of land. In 2004 the first wine of the 'Herdade Torre do Frade Reserva 2004' was made red and in 2006 this wine was exclusively available on the Portuguese market. After winning several international and national prizes, in 2011 the 'Virgo' was red and the 'Virgo' white ready for worldwide export.
