The white grape variety,Seara-Nova, is a new variety between Diagalves x Fernão Pires. It was crossed in Portugal in 1951 by Leão Ferreira. With the same parents, the new variety Rio Grande was created. The early-ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to the wood diseases Esca and eutypiosis, but resistant to fungal diseases. It produces alcohol-rich white wines with moderate acidity and fruity aromas. It is cultivated in the Ribatejo, Extremadura and the Azores (Pico) areas. In 2016, 471 hectares of vineyard area were designated with a decreasing tendency (Kym Anderson).
