Casal Figueira - Marta Soares
Her name is Marta Soares and she is the woman behind Casal Figueira wines, a wine project that was started over 20 years ago by her late-husband António Carvalho
Marta Soares and her husband Antonio started as pioneers in bio-dynamic wine making at the turn of the century, with a 13ha wine company at vineyards near Vermelha, about 80 km north of Lisbon. Everything biological - dynamic and with low yields. Antonio did the work in the vineyards and the cellars, Marta helps between the companies because is actually an artist and teacher.
From his passion and dedication of growing grapes, she learned to care for vines the way she would take care of a child, she learned to work with nature and respect all the natural limits and limitations imposed by this fickle 'friend'. Their ideas and philosophies fused: working dynamically in the vineyard and opting for minimal intervention in winemaking in the cellar.
As a team they worked together on a new place, their home, and a new project was born: they have found centuries old vines of Vital and Castelão that were scattered in small plots on the slopes of the Serra de Montejunto a new lease of life. The project flourished and received more and more recognition, but Marta now only works after the departure of António in 2009. She is now the passionate winemaker, the winery, the lady behind the name of the man on the Casal Figueira wines
Casal Figueira wines, although small in production (no more than 10,000 bottles a year), have become a true cult in Portugal. But the majority of Casal Figueira wines, in fact 99%, are sold abroad.
