Lisboa - Humus, Encosta da Quinta
Humus, Encosta da Quinta, Quinta do Paço. Rodrigo produces wines with a very nice fruit content, a real aromatic complexity and taste, and a nice acidity. His estate has been certified organic since 2007 |
Humus is the name of a project of Rodrigo Felipe, located on the family estate next to the village of Alvorninha in the town of Caldas da Raina, 1 hour north of Lisbone, a few km from the vineyards of the famous Marta Soares. The region has its own designation of origin (DO Óbidos) but Rodrigo prefers to sell the wines as Vinho Regional to avoid problems with the tasting committee.
Rodrigo's grandfather bought this 16th-century farmhouse in 1960 and his father planted the vineyards for personal use in the early 90s. After working as a civil engineer, Rodrigo tended to embark on a new adventure and became a winemaker in 1999.
Without oenology studies, he learned by studying his father's books and taking various courses. As he explains very simply, he discovered that the essence lies in the work of the vineyard and in obtaining healthy and perfectly ripe grapes. He started developing wines in the most natural way and his estate has been certified organic since 2007. It consists of 9 hectares of vines with dominant indigenous grape varieties such as Castelao (emblematic for the region), the Tinta Barroca and Touriga Nacional in red and Vital, Fernao Pirès and Arinto as white grapes, also some Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc, for the time being barely 20,000 L per year. The plots are on very steep slopes and are surrounded by a eucalyptus forest. The vineyard consists of clay and limestone and has a large Atlantic influence with grape harvests that often take place mid-October. Because of this, it has a long and very slow maturing time, making the wines more complex. Speaking of his wines, the name Humus was blown to him by his wife as a return to family roots and a connection with nature and her terroir. Rodrigo produces wines with a very nice fruit content, a real aromatic complexity and taste, and a nice acidity.
