A 3 year old madeira, light gold colored. Delicate and elegant with delicate aromas of almonds, orange peel and cloves. Medium dry on the palate with flavors of almonds and citrus fruit ending with a spicy finish.
"The bouquet is a beautiful blend of walnuts, orange peel, a fine base of salty ground notes, a little lemon and a top note of bay leaf. On the palate, the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely balanced by its remarkably richer style. For rainwater, with good acidity and good length and grip ... "John Gilman, A View From The Cellar

Grapes: Tinta Negra
This grape variety comes from the Portuguese mainland. It is a cross of a number of grape varieties, including Pinot noir and Grenache. After the catastrophic destruction of the vines by grape lice in 1875, most vineyards were replanted with the Tinta Negra. This blue grape variety now accounts for 85% of Madeiran production, it is easy to grow. Tinta negra is the basis for the cheap wines, but more and more good quality wine is made from it. Tinta negra has a thin skin and little color.
Mainly made from Tinta Negra Mole - with in this case also 10% Verdelho - Henriques & Henriques 3 year old blends are produced in an estufa process. They are then aged in oak barrels for 3 years before being bottled. Legend has it that "rainwater" resulted from a load of Madeira wine barrels left uncovered or uncorked for a while during heavy rains. The importer sold the wines on to unsuspecting customers anyway, but luckily the wines sold and proved extremely popular, a new style was born.
