Fresh and fragrant with plenty of rich dark berry and currant fruit, some good spicy notes of liquorice and dark chocolate but also a refreshing floral note. Great structure and very long on the finish.
A legendary 325 hectare estate in the upper Douro, Vesuvio was purchased in 1823 by António Bernardo Ferreira who built hundreds of terraces and an impressive adega over a thirteen year period. It was António’s daughter-in-law, Dona Antónia, who consolidated the estate’s fortunes and considerable reputation.
By the 1970s, despite its fame, the estate’s wines had become somewhat anonymous, and it is only under the stewardship of new owners, the Symingtons, that its fortunes have been revived. Vesuvio’s Ports are still trodden by foot in the quinta’s eight huge lagares. The estate has many single variety vineyards and, for the 2007 vintage, launched two table wines, alongside the famous Vintage Port.
