Quinta das Maias was founded in 1893 at the foot of the Serra de Estrela (star mountain). The name comes from the yellow gorse that grow on the slopes of the mountain and are called 'Maya' (May). The 15 hectares of vineyards consist of different plots and are all organic. The high altitude gives a nice acidity to the wine.
The aromas are an enticingly complex blend of pencil shavings, dried black cherry flavors, and a touch of spirituality. It is a very dense aroma, followed by an ever deeper texture with explosive concentration, but excellent tempered by fine tannins and balanced acidity.
