Niepoort Charme 2022 Tinto
Charme is the only still wine produced in Vale de Mendiz. It is a rare Douro wine. Its elegance and complexity, its enveloping, soft, and ripe tannins, uniquely express the very old, cooler, and sheltered vines of the Mendiz Valley, located in the Pinhão River Valley, in the heart of the Douro.
A fresh, very elegant wine with a clean color and great aromatic complexity. On the palate, it reveals a long finish, with very velvety tannins that give it good structure and mineral notes of fresh red fruits, all within a very long and rich overall intensity and persistence.
Charme 2022, clearly inspired by the Burgundian style of Pinot Noir, is produced in the Douro Valley, a historic winegrowing region known for its terraced vineyards and schist soils, which provide ideal conditions for producing expressive and aging wines. The Charme vineyards are located in the Vale de Mendiz, on the banks of the Pinhão River. These very old vines, ranging from 70 to over 100 years old, are planted at altitudes between 300 and 350 meters, allowing the grapes to benefit from cooler temperatures, thus preserving their freshness and acidity.
The schist soils play a key role in the wine's mineral complexity, while the old vines bring concentration and depth to the final blend. The natural growing practices employed at Niepoort enhance the grapes' expression of terroir, ensuring that each vintage reflects the unique conditions in which it was grown.
Food pairing
Spicy dishes, pepper steak, all red meats, and game such as partridge and pheasant. Other wine pairing ideas include Wild Mushroom Risotto, Roast Pigeon with cherries, and Herb-Crusted Lamb, where the fine tannins and subtle spices of the wine pair perfectly with tender lamb seasoned with herbs such as rosemary and thyme.
Grapes: Tinta Amarela (Trincadeira), Touriga Franca, Rufete, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão
The 2022 vintage was particularly challenging, marked by extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves and heavy rains. It was also the driest year of the 21st century, resulting in an early harvest, essential for maintaining the wine's balance. For Charme, small batches were produced early in the harvest, using whole bunches, foot-trodden in traditional stone lagares.
The wine underwent a short maceration period before completing alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels, where it was aged for 15 months. This winemaking process, combining traditional and modern methods, ensures a wine that is both elegant and structured, with integrated tannins and great aging potential.
