Casal Figueira Antonio Branco 2020 Bio
Vital is a rare old grape variety from Portugal, which was occasionally used in blends to give the wines some more acidity. Casal Figueira shows that this grape, grown from old sticks with low yields and biologically-dynamic, can produce a very exciting glass as a monocepage.
Compare it with Chenin, Sémillon, Albariño or an Italian Foradori white wine, but then Portuguese stubborn. Named after the wine maker who died too early, António Carvalho, who started this project. Deep, intriguing, elegant and full of excitement. An aroma of lemon, white flowers, fresh green apple and pear, with a hint of vanilla and warmth from the subdued oak. High fresh salty acidity. A unique and deliciously delicious biodynamic white wine.
Food pairing
perfect with seafood (oysters, calamari, marinated mussels, lawyer with shrimp, etc), Caldo Verde and with Asian dishes
Grapes: 100% Vital
The grapes for this wine come from 5 small, old vineyards in the hills north of the Serra de Montejunto, about 50km above Lisboa and not far from the Atlantic coast. The soil is mainly calcareous. The cultivation is biodynamic and no cultured yeasts are added to start the fermentation, cold pressing, light battonation and spontaneous fermentation for 8 months in 200 liter old French oak barrels.
Vital is a very rare grape, in fact 85% of all Vital production in Lisboa DO is owned by Casal Figuiera.
