Fitapreta Vinhos - Alentejo
António Maçanitas and David Booth met at a family dinner. David was older, a consultant to several wineries, and had a philanthropic background in his baggage devoted to protecting Kenya's wildlife and clearing Mozambique.
When they first met, António Maçanita, always defiant, made a provocative statement to David Booth that would eventually lead to a great friendship: "the industry's problem is the consultants"
Over the following months, António Maçanita followed David Booth on his advisory visits to various Quintas to learn more about vines, viticulture and producers. In 2004 António challenged David Booth to make wine with him, and although the Englishman initially refused, he eventually agreed.
"I thought it was time to put my knowledge into practice, so at Herdade da Malhadinha Nova, we vinified the PRETA 2004, a wine David and I made that eventually won the Alentejo Trophy at the International Wine Challenge."
It was also in that year that, through Fitapreta, they created the first edition of Sexy Tinto, an Alentejo wine that conquered the national and international market, first for its daring image and then for its indisputable quality. For three years in the Fitapreta project, they have vinified their creations in different wineries, using surplus grapes from Alentejo. In 2007 they moved to Outeiro da Esquila, where they started with production of 70 tons and ended ten years later with a production of 440 tons.
In this decade, very relevant wines from the portfolio of the Fitapreta project were born: Fitapreta Branco 2007, Tinto Castelão 2010, Baga ao Sol 2013, but especially the Vinho de Talha, of which they were pioneers in 2010 - especially the Branco de Talha - before current legislation. In 2008, a Branco de Tintas was born in Portugal for the first time, a wine to protest against the derogation created by the CVRA to buy 20% white grapes outside the region. The first harvest of Branco de Tintas from the Fitapreta project was listed as one of the best wines of the year by Revista dos Vinhos (Wine Magazine). In 2015, Fitapreta's project first makes contact with what would become his home, the Paço Morgado de Oliveira, a 14th-century medieval palace in Nossa Senhora da Graça do Divor, Évora. The land for the new winery of the Fitapreta project was purchased in 2016 and a year later this new space was inaugurated with the 2017 vintage.
António Maçanita continued to explore the terroir and history of Alentejo and in 2017 found 20 hectares of a vineyard that was over 50 years old with grapes such as, Tinta Carvalha, Alicante Branco, Moreto and Trincadeira das Pratas. This discovery took Fitapreta's project on a deep journey through ancient Alentejo. In 2018, the "Chão dos Eremitas" collection is born, a tribute to the other Alentejo, where the monocépage varietal wines produced from this Alentejo of yesteryear speak for themselves.
