Domingos Alves de Sousa, a civil engineer who returned to the family estate out of a passion for viticulture, and his son Tiago, the fifth generation, manage the vineyard today with passion and craftsmanship, producing wines full of elegance and complexity.
 
The family now owns 6 quintas: Gaivosa, Vale da Raposa, Caldas, Estação, Aveleira, and Oliveirinha, and the vineyard portfolio covers a total of approximately 135 hectares. 
Alves de Sousa; A family story from the Douro
Alves de Sousa became one of the frontrunners in the rise of Douro wines with the production of his highly acclaimed Quinta da Gaivosa.

The family story
The Alves de Sousa winery has been in the family for five generations. After years of growing grapes for well-known port companies such as Ferreira and Borges, a turning point came for the family in the late 1980s. The port business began to decline, and Domingos Alves de Sousa decided to focus on producing still wines from his own grapes. To create the best of the best, he conducted the necessary viticulture and vinification studies and selected the most suitable grape varieties. In doing so, he became one of the pioneers of the new generation of Douro wine producers that emerged in the early 1990s. He inspired many others to follow and realize that the Douro Valley can produce great dry wines alongside great port. 

The Quintas
Quinta da Gaivosa is the jewel of the estate. Quinta da Gaivosa is situated in the upper part of the Douro, where steep slopes and ancient slate soils define the landscape. Here, the vines grow deeply rooted in the poor soil, resulting in low yields but an intense concentration in the grapes. Quinta da Gaivosa is located in the heart of the Douro Valley, on the right bank of the river. The vineyards hold the highest quality classification in the region: Letter A.

Recognition & Awards
The quality and distinctiveness of its wines are widely recognized with distinctions and mentions in the most acclaimed national and international publications. Alves de Sousa has received the most coveted and prestigious "Producer of the Year" award, presented by the leading Portuguese wine magazine, Revista de Vinhos, twice: in 1999 and 2006.

The winemaker of the future
The winemaker at all the quintas is Domingos' son, the talented Tiago Alves de Sousa, who holds a degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro.

In short: Alves de Sousa is one of the most iconic and influential families from the Douro, pioneers of dry Douro wine, guardians of centuries-old terroirs, and ambassadors of a region that has much more to offer than just port.
