Tejo - Quinta da Alorna
Tradition combined with modernism. Quinta da Alorna, with almost 300 years of history, has been owned by the Lopo de Carvalho family for five generations.Quinta da Alorna is founded by D. Pedro de Almeida. After capturing the resistant fortress of Alorna, near Goa, where he held the position of Viceroy, he received from the King of Portugal, D. João V, the title of 1st Marquis of Alorna. D. Pedro de Almeida, was D. Leonor, IV Marquess of Alorna - the poetess Alcipe - grandfather. At that time (1723) the estate, owned by the Marquis of Alorna, was called Quinta de Vale de Nabais.
Many years later, two of D. Leonor's daughters sold the "Quinta dos Alorna" (as it was called) to the counts of Junqueira, and the heirs sold it by public auction and passed it on to Dr. Manuel Caroca. grandfather of the current shareholders - respectable dentist, trading broker and great businessman who eventually became the sole owner of Quinta da Alorna.
The vineyards are strongly influenced by the river that gives its name to the region – Tejo. The Tagus (Tajo) River is responsible for shaping the terroirs of the region, making the plains around it ideal for growing grapes. The proximity of our vineyards to the river Tagus (Tajo), makes the thermal amplitude a fundamental factor in the quality of the grape. In our case, the River Tagus (Tajo) is undoubtedly the dominant element of this region, making a decisive contribution to the fresh profile of the wines produced here.
In the case of our Tejo region, there are three different terroirs: "charneca", "bairro" and "campo".
Campo is located on the vast plains bordering the Tagus (Tajo) River which is subject to periodic flooding. These are responsible for the high fertility index of the soil and make this an area of choice for the production of white wines. The natural fertility of the region requires precise viticulture.
Charneca is located south of Campo, on the left bank of the Tagus River (Tajo), with sand and stone (rolled pebbles) low fertile soils, with potential for both red and white wine production.
Quinta da Alorna, with about 160 hectares of vineyards, which is divided into grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon, Alicante Bouschet, Fernão Pires, Arinto and Chardonnay, produces its wines using new winemaking technologies. The result is products with the quality, excellence and competitiveness that the market demands.
Quinta da Alorna is distinguished not only by the quality of the wines produced on the estate, but also by its agriculture, forest and nature.
