Quinta do Vesuvio

Visiting Quinta do Vesuvio is a breathtaking experience. It is the most spectacular Quinta in the Douro Valley and one of the best vineyards in the world, located in the wild and serene beautiful upper Douro, 120 km east of Porto and 45 km from the Spanish border. The great strength of Quinta do Vesuvio is the enormous size: 136 hectares of A-category vineyard on a 325-hectare site with a variety of microclimates. The vineyards are spread over seven hills and seven valleys and lie at different heights, between 130 and 530 meters.

Vesuvio started as a corn farm. The first vines were planned by the Ferreira family, who took over the quinta in 1823. Dona Antonia Ferreira's hospitality was legendary; Baron Forrester got his fatal accident after a lunch at Vesuvio ... In this period the vineyards were well cared for and lots of experiments were done. Hellas caused the phylloxera that the yield was nil. Out of desperation, the Ferreira's then tried to breed silkworms. Vesuvio was the property of 18 members of the Ferreira family in 1989 under Portuguese law. They decided to sell the vineyard.

And that's what the Symington family did, also owner of the Graham's, Dow's and Warre's port houses. Thanks to an ambitious investment program, Quinta do Vesuvio has joined the top of the port world and is now counted among the best producers of vintage port. Unlike most port houses that produce a wide range of port wines, Quinta do Vesuvio exclusively produces vintage ports: Quinta do Vesuvio and the rare Capela do Vesuvio. If the wine is not good enough, it is sold to other port houses.
