The Van Zeller winery embodies the centuries-old tradition of one of the oldest families in the Portuguese wine trade. This family has been active for over 400 years and has existed for 15 generations. The roots of the Van Zeller family go back to the 13th century, more specifically in the Belgian village of Zellaar. The family lived there before emigrating to Spain and Portugal in the 17th century because of the religious wars in Central and Northern Europe.

Van Zeller: from Belgium to the wine trade

The Van Zeller family entered the wine and port wine sector at the beginning of the 18th century. Ancestors such as Jorge Fernandes and his son-in-law were seen as leading wine merchants in their time. This laid the foundation for what is now the longest, uninterrupted wine-growing dynasty in Portugal.
