Douro - Kopke

A port from Kopke is recognized for its quality and the reference in the market.

Kopke, the world's oldest port house, was founded in 1638 by Cristiano Köpke. In 1636, the German diplomat Nicolau Kopkë traveled with his son, Cristiano, from Hamburg to Portugal, representing the Hanseatic League. Two years later he founded Nicolau Kopkë & Co. op, a shipping company that would eventually become widely recognized as the first port house in the history of the industry. In 1781, they bought a farm in the Douro, making the switch from shipper to producer and port wine gradually became their main business focus.

In 1828, Nicolau's great-great-grandson, C. N. Kopkë, sided with the Liberal Party during the Portuguese Civil War. After the war he was given the title of Baron of Vilar and ten years later his cousin was given the title of Baron of Massarelos. In 1841 the name of the company was changed to C. N. Kopke and it has remained so to this day. Nearly a century later, in 1940, the Port House was officially recognized as the oldest in the world. Kopke has an excellent reputation, supported by many gold medals, especially for their Tawny (barrel-aged) port. Befitting their status as the oldest port house, their bottles are easily recognizable by their traditional hand-stenciled style.

As mentioned above, Kopke is specialized in Tawny port and in particular the Colheitas. A Colheita port is lighter than a Vintage port and suits many more occasions & food than a Vintage port. 80% of the port made at Kopke is Tawny port. Kopke has more than 100 years of Tawny Port in house. But the white, ruby and vintage ports are also delicious wines at a reasonable price, suitable for the novice port drinker. In 2006, Casa Kopke is taken over by the Sogevinus group. The brand and quality is maintained, and meanwhile they became the leader of the postage market in the "Colheita" category.
