Barbeito Madeira Familias 50 years medium sweet
Intense and fresh bouquet with notes of polished wood, pungent aromatic spices, light balsamic, salted caramel, prunes and walnuts. Very elegant in the mouth, refined flavours with a fantastic acidity. Finesse in a citrus, fresh and long finish.
William Shakespeare referred to the Madeira Wine in his play “Henry IV”, as one of the immortal characters, Falstaff, was accused of exchanging his soul for a chicken leg and a glass of Madeira. Furthermore, in the late 15th century, one of the victims of the War of the Roses, the Duke of Clarence, was sentenced to death and was given a right to choose the style of execution. He chose to be drowned in a barrel of Malmsey wine of Madeira. The Duke was not forgotten by the Madeirense people for his dedication to the wine. His name, along with the Duke of Cumberland and the Duke of Sussex, are given to the types of affordable Madeira wines that denote a light, three-year-old style blend made from Tinta Negra.

Along the past years, Barbeito winemaker Ricardo Diogo had the privilege to work on some special projects with the Favila Vieira (Ribeiro Real) and Manuel Eugénio Fernandes (Seixal) families, continuing the long friendships that came from his grandfather and his mother. He added three different wines to make this blend, Sercial, Verdelho and Malvasia - each at least 50 years old. Each one of them is the symbol of these families’ efforts to preserve Madeira wines and its long history. This blend results in a wine marked by an extraordinary and unforgettable acidity. After more than 50 years in oak barrels, 618 individually numbered units were bottled in November of 2021.

Store & Serve
Always keep a Madeira wine upright.
The acids of Madeira are so strong that they attack the cork if the bottle is stored lying down
Serving: 16 °C
Madeira is a wine matured in an oxidative environment for several years, and then comes into the bottle in a reductive environment. It is therefore useful to open the bottles a few hours in advance. The bottles can then be kept almost unlimited, since the air has no influence on Madeira wines. In fact, the wine tastes better after months - if it remains - than when the bottle is opened.
