Avesso is an iconic variety in the south-east of the Vinho Verde region, which is expressed most broadly, authentically and qualitatively in the Baião subregion. There, in the Douro Valley and on the poor soils that characterise the vineyards on the slopes, Avesso is a vigorous variety that enjoys a dry climate, cold winters and very hot summers. Depending on the harvest time, Avesso grapes can show characteristics such as great aromatic expression, acidity, freshness or concentration, revealing enormous oenological potential for young wines or for wines that can age.
Among the great Portuguese white grape varieties, the Avesso grape is one that arouses great curiosity. Its name alone is an enigma, suggesting an idea of aversion or hostility towards something. The variety is not one of the most productive and it is a fact that viticulture outside the excellent terroir is not easy. Its exclusivity is also determined by this.

In Santa Marinha do Zêzere, Baião, in the south-east of the demarcated region of Vinho Verde, right in the heart of the Douro Valley, the Cazas Novas project was born, which proposes a unique journey through the study and interpretation of one of the most exciting Portuguese white grape varieties – Avesso.
The name Cazas Novas is inspired by one of the centuries-old farms of the Cunha Coutinho family, who own the largest area in the Baião sub-region dedicated to the cultivation of this Portuguese white grape variety. In total, it is a treasure of 24 hectares, concentrated in an area considered the area of excellence for the expression of this exclusive variety.
In a transitional area between Vinhos Verdes and Douro, and with the river as an influence and backdrop, the vineyards are located on the slopes, on granite soils, facing high temperature differences, in a terroir of excellence for the Avesso grape variety, producing wines that are unique and unparalleled in any other region, characterised by their freshness and minerality, but also by their potential for evolution.
With Quinta das Cazas Novas, Quinta de Guimarães and two other properties overlooking the Douro, Quinta do Adro and Quinta das Tias, the Cunha Coutinho family has a forestry and agricultural heritage of more than 100 hectares, of which 24 hectares are exclusively dedicated to the cultivation of the Avesso grape variety.
The first bottled wine was bottled in 2008, with a remarkable edition of 3333 bottles. Since 2011, with the support of winemaker Diogo Lopes and Vasco Magalhães, the study of the Avesso grape variety began and the foundations were laid for the current wine project, in which a partnership has been established with four entrepreneurs: Carlos Coutinho (agricultural and financial management), Diogo Lopes (oenology and viticulture), Vasco Magalhães (commercial management and marketing) and André Miranda (production and management).
