The character of the 2018 wines was influenced by an unusual and at times challenging vintage. This followed a very hot and dry 2017 and by mid-January 56% of Portugal, particularly the north-east, was declared to be in severe drought. Fortunately, March was very wet and heavy rainfall, totalling 223mm at Pinhão, built up the groundwater reserves that would prove vital during the ripening season. The weather remained cold and wet until late June, causing mould in some vineyards, and hailstorms on 28 May caused extensive damage to some properties in the Pinhão area.
Vines were planted in Romaneira as early as 1757, when the Douro Valley was demarcated.
Quinta da Romaneira is the third largest quinta (farm) in the Douro Valley, with its 412 hectares. It is a collection of 12 original quintas, mainly dating from the 19th century and reaching their current size in 1942.
For many years, Quinta da Romaneira lived a quiet life, producing good vintage and tawny port wines. In addition, it also sold port wine to the big houses.
When Quinta da Romaneira came up for sale in 2003, Christian Seely saw the opportunity to acquire this unique Quinta, with its more than 3 kilometres of vineyards down to the Douro River and its 412 hectares of exclusively A-classified vineyards. In addition, there are fields from the Douro River up to 600 meters altitude, which offers many opportunities to create optimal conditions for the many different grape varieties and to produce fresh wines.
Christian Seely is and was also director of the famous Quinta do Noval (from 1993), and from 2001 also CEO. Director of the entire AXA wine portfolio (including Chateau Pichon Baron 2 cru. in Bordeaux, Chateau Suduiraut, 1 Cru in Sauternes and more). Here he had the opportunity to do what he wanted: grow wine that only comes from a single Quinta. Together with André Esteves, a Brazilian businessman, he now owns Quinta da Romaneira, which has been renovated since 2004.

An attractively perfumed wine that shows a fine balance between fresh acidity and soft, sweet fruits. It is light in texture, open rather than concentrated. There is a rich black cherry final character.
92/100 - Tom Cannavan Tasted: Jan 2014
(2014) Interesting high note to this, perhaps a little gamey, herbal, but with lift and elegance. The fruit is so sweet on the palate, so dustily fresh and full, with delicious balancing tannin that is fine, racy, tight yet also chocolate rich, and the excellent acidity. So young, tight, and elegant.
