The vineyard for its Vinha Pan - this cuvée owes its name to the location in Panasqueira, where the grapes grow in a southerly direction on a clay and limestone soil - was created by Luis Pato in 1980. A delicious red wine, expressive, very pure and fresh fruit, wild berries, light balsamic, mint. Polished tannins, refreshing taste, very fine and delicate but at the same time intense and firm. In the long finish there are hints of sweet wood, blueberries and spicy notes. This wine can be kept for years
Luis describes himself as a ‘free’ winemaker. He believes that the fact that he trained as a chemical engineer and not an oenologist has given him a different perspective on making wine. His philosophy marries old-world style and Latin-born influence with an appreciation of a more Anglo-Saxon style vision. Oh, and he is also a pragmatist! Filipa, Pato’s daughter, also a trained chemical engineer, hasn’t just followed in her father’s footsteps, she’s gained a reputation in her own right. An innovator like her father with a similar bent for pushing boundaries. One thing that father and daughter share too is a desire to make wines as naturally as possible. ‘We worked in the chemical industry,’ explains Luis, ‘we don’t want to have to pay for their chemicals!’ Filipa says she aims to make ‘authentic wines without make-up’.

When the Luis Pato Vinha Pan grapes are harvested, they undergo hyperoxygenation as an alternative to adding sulphates. The wine then ferments at a controlled temperature and finally ages in 500-litre oak barrels. Before it is bottled, the wine is clarified and filtered.

Tinto elaborado exclusivamente a partir de uvas Baga, cultivadas em solos argilo-calcários, advindas unicamente da Vinha Pan, com estágio de 24 meses em barricas novas e usadas de carvalho francês. Impressiona pela nitidez de suas frutas vermelhas e negras frescas, seguidas de notas terrosas, de ervas e de especiarias doces, que aparecem tanto no nariz quanto na boca. Preciso, compacto e refinado, tem acidez pulsante, taninos firmes e de grãos finíssimos e final profundo e complexo, com toques florais, de cerejas, de groselhas, de tabaco e de giz. Muito sedutor, está ótimo agora e tem tudo para ficar ainda melhor nas próximas décadas.
