Douro - Quinta da Vista Alegre

Vista Alegre — A Family Legacy from the Heart of the Douro
Nestled on the right bank of the Douro river, between the mouth of the Pinhão river and Covas do Douro, Vista Alegre is a name synonymous with the finest port wines hailing from Portugal's Douro Valley. The story of this venerated port wine producer began in the early 20th century, when founder Manuel de Sousa Guimaraens set his sights on crafting unparalleled port wines that would captivate the palates of wine enthusiasts worldwide.

A Family Business Through Five Generations
Quinta da Vista Alegre was acquired by the Cunha Barros family in 1965 and incorporated into the Sociedade Agrícola Barros S.A. Later, in May 1998, the company changed its name to Vallegre — Vinhos do Porto S.A., resulting from the merging of the names of two of its most important quintas, Valle Longo and Vista Alegre.

Today, the fifth generation of the family continues this legacy, upholding the quality and reputation that their forebears worked tirelessly to establish. Few port producers can boast such an unbroken chain of family dedication, making Vista Alegre not just a winery, but a living testament to Portuguese winemaking heritage.

The Quinta and Its Vineyards
The quinta covers 55 hectares of vineyards, where classic grape varieties such as Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca are grown. Vallegre still uses traditional methods such as treading grapes in old lagars, which ensures the high quality of their port wines. In addition to port wines, they also produce table wines of the highest quality, which together with the port wines express the character and history of the Douro Valley.
The challenging terrain and schistose soils of the region force the vine roots to delve deep into the earth, drawing minerals and nutrients that give Vista Alegre's wines their distinctive depth, complexity and sense of place.

The Wines
Vista Alegre produces an impressive range of port styles, from vibrant Ruby and refined Tawny to prestigious aged Colheita and Vintage ports. The Vista Alegre Vintage ports, created in select and superior years, encapsulate the richness and diversity of the terroir. They offer an extraordinary depth of flavour, robust structure and stunning longevity, ideally paired with full-flavoured cheeses and rich chocolate desserts. The Colheita ports are aged gracefully in barrels, making them a mellow and elegant accompaniment to almond tarts or creamy blue cheeses. Among their most celebrated offerings is the Vista Alegre Lágrima, the sweetest expression in the range — a white port of remarkable concentration, perfect served chilled as an aperitif or alongside light desserts.

A wards and Recognition
The quality of Vista Alegre's wines has earned recognition on the international stage. Their Vintage ports have been awarded gold at Mundus Vini and bronze at the International Wine Challenge, competing against the world's finest fortified wines.

A Name to Remember
Without ignoring its past and the knowledge acquired and passed down through the generations, Vallegre is a dynamic, modern company that maintains the production of the highest quality port wines and Douro DOC table wines as its primary aim. For any lover of port wine, Vista Alegre is not simply a label, it is a story of soil, tradition and family pride, bottled with care for over a century.
